Why snow plowing gets booked in October, not January

Most people think about snow removal during the first real storm. By then the decision has already been made for them, because plow routes are built weeks earlier and they are built to be driven in a specific order.

A route is a sequence, not a list

A plow operator is not picking properties off a list as calls come in. The route is planned so the truck moves in one continuous direction with minimal backtracking, because in a storm the enemy is drive time between stops. Adding a property mid-storm means breaking that sequence, which delays everyone behind it.

That is why calling during a storm usually gets a no, and it is not because nobody wants the work.

Seasonal contract or per storm

Both are legitimate, they suit different situations.

• A seasonal contract puts you in the route sequence for the whole winter at an agreed price. You are covered for every storm, and in a heavy year that is the better deal.
• Per storm means you pay per visit. It costs less in a mild winter, but you are lower priority than contracted properties by definition.

For a business the calculation is different again, because commercial is not really about convenience. A lot that is not clear when your people and your customers arrive is a liability you own. That is why commercial properties get sequenced first on our routes and why commercial snow is almost always contracted rather than per storm.

The advantage of one company year round

Whoever plows your property in February should ideally be whoever mowed it in July. They already know where the bed edges are, where the walkway runs under the snow, and which corner of the drive has the drop-off. A plow operator seeing a property for the first time in a whiteout is how lawns get torn up and edging gets destroyed.

Most landscapers disappear in November. Booking a company that works all twelve months means the property is handled by people who know it.
