Every year we get the same call in the second week of November: the leaves are down, the yard is buried, and the caller wants it cleared before the weekend. By then the schedule has been full for a month. This is not a sales line, it is just how the season works on the South Shore, and it is worth understanding if you would rather not be that call.
The schedule fills before the leaves fall
Cleanup crews book on forecast, not on the state of your yard. By late September most of the autumn calendar is committed to properties that were on last year's list and rebooked automatically. What is left goes fast once the first heavy drop happens, because that is when everybody calls at once.
If you want a specific week, September is when to ask. If you want any week at all, mid October is about the limit before you are taking what is available.
The calendar is not arbitrary. NOAA's 30 year normals put the average first fall frost in the Boston area around October 25, with the last spring frost around April 10, giving roughly 198 frost free days. Cleanup work is compressed into the weeks before that first frost, which is a narrower window than most people picture, and it is the same window every landscaper in the region is working inside.
One visit is often the wrong plan
This is the part people get wrong, and it costs them. Trees do not drop on a schedule. Oaks in particular hold their leaves long after the maples have finished, so a property with mixed mature trees drops in waves over four to six weeks.
Book a single cleanup for the third week of October on a lot like that and you get a tidy yard for about ten days, then a second yard full of leaves with nobody scheduled to remove it. On heavily treed properties in towns like Sharon and Milton we plan for more than one pass, because the alternative is a job that only looks finished.
What a proper cleanup actually includes
Worth knowing when you compare quotes, because "fall cleanup" covers a wide range of thoroughness:
- Leaves off the lawn, out of the beds, and away from the foundation, not just the open grass
- Sticks and storm debris cleared
- Perennials and dead growth cut back
- Beds re-edged where the line has drifted over the season
- Hard surfaces blown clean at the end
- Everything hauled off the property the same day
That last one matters more than it sounds. A cleanup that ends with a pile behind the garage is not finished, it is deferred, and you will be looking at it in April.
Why leaves left on the lawn cause a problem
A layer of wet leaves sitting on turf through a New England winter blocks light and traps moisture against the crown of the plant. Come spring you get matted, thinned patches that need overseeding to recover, which is a bigger job than the cleanup would have been. Beds are worse, because leaf mat holds moisture against the base of shrubs all winter.
None of this is dramatic. It is just cheaper to move the leaves than to repair the lawn.
