What you are actually paying for in a paver patio

Wide banded paver driveway with a circular inlay running to a two-car garage.

People are often surprised how far apart paver patio quotes come in for what looks like the same job. The pavers themselves are a modest part of the cost and everybody buys them from the same yards. The spread comes from labour, excavation, and how much base goes in.

Where the money actually goes

Read that list again and notice that only one line is the part you see. The rest is preparation, and it is roughly where the price is decided.

The corner that gets cut

Base depth. It is invisible on the day the job finishes and it is the single biggest determinant of whether the patio is still flat in five years. A patio on a thin base over poorly compacted ground will settle, usually unevenly, usually first at the edges and wherever water collects.

The frustrating part for a homeowner is that a cheap patio and a properly built one look identical for the first two seasons. The difference only shows up later, at which point fixing it means taking it up.

What makes a quote trustworthy

A written scope that states the excavation depth, the base depth, the material, and what happens at the edges. Not a single number with a description of the paver. If the base depth is not written down, it is not committed to.

Where a patio is worth more than it costs

The best-value hardscape on most properties is not actually the big rear patio. It is the front walk and the landing at the door, because it is smaller, it is the first thing every visitor touches, and it changes how the whole front of the house reads. On modest lots around Randolph and Holbrook that is consistently where we would spend the first money.
